Your Stay With Us
Step by step through what awaits you here – from admission to the ward to the evening before your surgery.
What Awaits You Here
After your examination and admission by the doctor, we will accompany you to our ward and show you to your room. We understand that the first moments can be full of anticipation and uncertainty. That is why we will do everything we can to make you feel as comfortable as possible.
First we will show you your room and its facilities. We will explain how to operate the adjustable bed, where to find the call button for the nurse and anything else you might need during your stay.
We will offer you tea or water, whichever you prefer, and give you a quiet moment to settle in and unpack your things.
Once you feel more at ease, a nurse will come to see you, take you through the pre-operative preparation in detail and answer all your questions. Our aim is for you to know what lies ahead and to feel as calm as possible.
Pre-operative Preparation
Part of the preparation is emptying the bowel, which is important for the safe course of the operation. Depending on the doctor's instructions, this is done using a suppository or an enema. The nurse will explain everything to you in advance and guide you through each step.
The preparation also includes shaving the surgical area. If the shaving is not sufficient, we will agree together whether you would prefer to do it yourself, or whether a member of the nursing staff will help you.
Everything is done sensitively and with the utmost respect for your privacy.
Eating and Drinking the Day Before Surgery
The day before your operation we recommend drinking plenty of fluids. Good hydration helps the body cope better with the operation and with the recovery that follows. You can drink water, tea, juice or other non-alcoholic drinks. What matters is that you take in enough fluids.
After your admission we will agree together whether you have already eaten, or would still like a snack. After that we recommend not eating larger amounts of food, so that the bowel preparation is as effective as possible.
You will receive dinner as prescribed by the doctor, usually a light meal such as yoghurt, a fruit purée or a nutritional drink.
The Evening Before Surgery
In the evening the nurse will come to see you again. Following the anesthesiologist's recommendation, she will explain which medicines from your regular medication you may take in the evening or on the morning of the operation. If the anesthesiologist has prescribed something to help you sleep, the nurse will give it to you. We want you to spend the night before your operation as peacefully as possible.
In the early evening we will also insert an intravenous cannula. It allows us to give you fluids or medicines quickly if needed, and so keep you safe. Inserting a cannula is a routine part of pre-operative preparation.
You Are Not Alone in This
We know that every patient arrives with different worries. That is why the nurse will go through the coming days with you, explain what awaits you before the operation as well as after it, and will gladly answer all your questions. Please do not hesitate to ask about anything. We are here for you.
It is our wish that you feel safe here, that you are well informed and that you know you are not facing any of this alone. Our whole team is here for you and will do everything possible to make your stay as pleasant as it can be.
